enspired recently partnered up with French multi-energy company TotalEnergies as part of their acceleration program TotalEnergies On, which supports start-ups developing innovative electricity solutions. The collaboration centers around the commercial optimization of battery storage systems in France and Belgium. Since the main function of grid-scale battery assets in the French electricity market is the avoidance of frequency deviation within the power grid, the aim of the partnership is to evaluate additional ways of increasing the utilization of both existing and planned battery storage systems.

The customer and the use case
A key player in the aggregation business, the TotalEnergies division for flexible power solutions operates more than 3GW of contracted renewable generation. The mission is to secure long-term revenues while enhancing the potential of aggregated energy assets. Fully committed to intensifying its meaningful contributions to the energy transition, TotalEnergies is doubling down on optimizing grid-scale battery storage. While historically, ancillary services represented the primary and only market for battery optimization, enspired’s one-of-a-kind technology generates an additional revenue stream by extending the earning potential to different wholesale markets.
As part of the cooperation, enspired uses its in-house technology to create a digital twin for existing batteries, simulating optimization across ancillary services and wholesale markets including state of charge (SoC) management with real-time data. The initial focus lies on jointly enhancing the existing optimization models for batteries in France and Belgium to lay the optimal groundwork for commercial operation. The active management of battery storage on multiple markets allows TotalEnergies to decide when their batteries are used to save emissions while creating additional revenue. This is achieved by opting to charge when the grid runs on a big share of renewables and to discharge when most of the power supply comes from conventionals.
